Profile

María Murillo-Romero is an architect with a PhD from the University of the Basque Country whose work sits at the intersection of urban planning, built heritage and cultural landscape. Her career combines professional practice with applied research and teaching under a constant premise: understanding the city as living heritage that must be managed, inhabited and passed on. Her research focuses on the characterisation and assessment of productive cultural landscapes, particularly the urban landscape of sherry in Jerez and port in Oporto, the subject of her doctoral thesis, defended summa cum laude with international mention. This line has extended into articles, book chapters and lectures, consolidating a methodology transferable to other landscapes and territories. On the professional side, she has provided normative advisory and technical transfer for the Official College of Architects of Seville through the FIDAS Foundation and the NEXARQ project; planning and citizen participation at EDDEA studio, including strategic urban plans in Morocco; and neighbourhood assessment for EMVISESA, the municipal housing company of Seville. This trajectory is complemented by a fellowship at the General Secretariat of Housing of the Government of Andalusia and continued collaboration with architecture studios. The international dimension is part of her training: member of the WG3 research group of COST Action CA18110 on underground built heritage, with scientific missions in Italy and Malta; research stays at the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage and the Faculty of Architecture of Porto; and invited teaching in Ecuador (UTE) and at CIEE Study Abroad Seville. The combination of research, practice and teaching defines her understanding of architecture: a situated discipline with technical rigour and the capacity to transfer knowledge into public decision-making.
